An urban answer to underutilized space that helps bring both businesses and social interactions into the outdoor space
First born in San Francisco as a hybrid between a public park and a parking space, parklets have become an urban answer to underutilized space that helps to bring the neighbourhood together and shape the character of the space. The role of parklets has become even more crucial and strategic during the current times, where both businesses and social interactions’ environment moved to an outdoor space.
Moving away from the temporary aesthetic of the urban furniture and focusing on the habits and needs of living in the city, Baia (2020) offers a series of functional elements to create warm and welcoming areas where nature is integrated and inspires the design.
The platform, composed of a rectangular metal structure paved with concrete tiles, is the foundation on which multi-purpose elements can be combined. The concept is characterised by the juxtaposition of organic and rigorous shapes, emphasizing the properties of the building materials. Cylindrical metal columns are the support base for tables with different sizes and benches in ultra-high-performance concrete.
