Cassina represents the quintessence of Italian design with over 90 years of history. From the early collaboration with Gio Ponti to the creative direction of Patricia Urquiola, their catalogue is a true collection of icons.
When creating La Mise (2012), a family of chairs and sofas, we got inspired by the way that a kimono wraps around its wearer. La Mise pieces feature a single piece of high-quality fabric that folds around the metal framework like a tailor-made dress. Natural folds form each time the product is used, granting it an empathetic quality that reacts to and reflects its users.
In the traditional Japanese art of origami, paper is folded again and again until it becomes a work of art. With each fold, the delicate material strengthens. Motek (2013) is a family of lightweight chairs and armchairs inspired by origami’s firmness. All models feature a pressure-moulded shell that allows the fabric to bear the user’s weight while remaining comfortable and soft. The backrest and sides of the seat feature graceful folds for extra support.
Named after the Japanese term for a tray, the Torei family (2012-2014) of tables is inspired by the compactness and flexibility of serving trays. Elegant metal legs support an ash wood or Carrara marble top with folded edges that evoke Japanese delicacies. Torei’s various configurations grant it a true versatility, letting it work independently, in tandem with a sofa, or arranged alongside other products in the family to create a striking assemblage of display tables.
