Golconda

The Golconda lamp is named after the René Magritte painting in which dozens of businessmen in black suits and bowler hats fall from the sky like raindrops. And with its spun aluminium shade – which resembles the hats in the painting – appearing to float above an off-centre conical base, the Golconda draws on the kind of surrealism that Magritte specialised in. The asymmetrical pairing of base and shade allows the lamp to rotate and cast light beyond its own centre of gravity, illuminating a large swathe of the surface below.
