Arflex’s work starts in 1947, with a group of technicians from Pirelli, including Aldo Bai, Pio Reggiani, Aldo Barassi and a young architect named Marco Zanuso that begin to experiment with the use of foam rubber and elastic tapes for furniture. The company was officially presented to the public in 1951, at the IX Triennale in Milan. Since then, Arflex has been devoted to innovation and experimentation in upholstered furniture.
We have been collaborating with the brand since 2014, always highlighting the company's heritage and experimental manufacturing processes. Our creative bond with the brand has been driven by scrupulous research through the company’s archives and a deep intimacy with Arflex’s DNA.
DRAWING FROM CINI BOERI’S PECORELLE
Supplì is a curvy club chair supported by slender metal legs. Our starting point was the Pecorelle chair designed by Cini Boeri for the brand in the seventies, which has become a design classic. We studied its soft shapes and came up with this sinuous armchair with resolute roundness - a 2020 reinterpretation of the iconic piece.AN OPEN SEASHELL
Tellin, released in 2018, is a lounge chair with the appearance of an open seashell. Two “valves” meet and merge by overlapping so to compose the seat and backrest, an encounter that marks the juxtaposition of the different colours of the upholstery.INSPIRED BY WHAT WAS COOL IN THE 60’S
Ladle, presented in 2014, is a contemporary take on the look and comfort of some of the most iconic armchairs of the 1960s. The Ladle family includes small, medium and large variants. Each chair features a spoon-like seat structure that can be customised with three different backrests and the same number of styles of legs. The chairs are available in wooden, tube metal or four-spoke swivel and tilt versions.MODULAR COSINESS
The perfect sofa should provide complete cosiness, making users feel safely enclosed within its structure. Named after a baby carrier, Papoose (2015) is a modular sofa system that combines tailored upholstery detailing with complete comfort and elements customizable to a variety of different sizes.STRICT FORMALITY AND SOFT COMFORT
The Algon High Back (2016) chair was developed in conjunction with the Algon chair, melding Scandinavian simplicity with a patterned quilted upholstery designed by us. Algon has a strict formality, while offering soft comfort. Algon High Back features high sides allowing for a sense of privacy, a perfect seat for hushed late-night conversations or a solitary moment of respite. Algon’s name references the North American Algonquian tribes.Serena And Doge (2014) are a duo, named after an ancient word for Venice and its leader, composed of a bergère-style armchair and accompanying ottoman. They are inspired by classic Italian design and are made using traditional construction techniques and echoing the style and formality of Venice’s Ducal Palace.
Capilano Table System (2016) takes its name from the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver. Originally developed to complement the Papoose sofa, Capilano evolved into a stand-alone series of coffee and side-tables available in numerous configurations: square, triangular and rectangular. While the frame is metal, the tabletop is made in wood or Laminam.
