The installation ’Decode/ Recode’ was presented by Salviati during Milan Design Week 2017. Our Studio collaborated with Ben Gorham, founder of fragrance and accessory brand Byredo, on an installation researching new possibilities for traditional glass craftsmanship. Two connected installations, ‘Pyrae’ and ‘Strata’, constructed with mouth blown objects specifically designed and crafted for the event, populated the space in two joined warehouses in the heart of Ventura Centrale district In Milano as an experimentation of how the different ways glass can be adapted to form modular objects.
Pyrae hall hosted 53 illuminated totems, formed by stacking hand-blown glass elements. Composed in different sequences and placed upon each other, several modules, (each formed using ten traditional glass making techniques) allowed for the creation of thousands of combinations.
The Strata hall represented a study on modularity, through layering of delicate glass elements. Ben Gorham created carousels of glass panels, which were then hung alongside and above each other to create combinations of illuminated towers. The configurations of repeated modules showcased the potential for organizing a single piece into a colossal composition.
